Tongue-Tie Services

Feed and Flow Clinic combines specialist training in both tongue-tie care and IBCLC infant feeding support to look at you and your baby’s whole clinical picture. We offer professional, calm and evidence-based 90 minute appointments for both breast and bottle fed babies to fully assess feeding and tongue function from the comfort of your own home.

Danielle has worked in London and North West Tongue-tie clinics and draws on her experience as a neonatal nurse and midwife provide expertise to you and your family.   • A 90 minute appointment is set aside to provide unrushed care from the comfort of your own home. Prior to the appointment you will be sent a pre-visit questionnaire to complete allowing Danielle to assess the full clinical picture including medical and feeding history.

    • Full infant feeding assessment, support and adaptations

    • Tongue-tie / oral assessment

    • Explanation of findings

    • Tongue-tie division (if indicated) with informed consent

    • Feeding support post procedure

    • Detailed feeding plan and resources (if required)

    • Aftercare advice

    • 48hours of whatsapp feeding support

    • Follow-up phone call 1 week post-procedure

    Please note if the assessment indicates a frenulotomy but you do not wish to go ahead with the procedure or wish to have time to think we can use conservative management with a robust feeding plan. Then if you wish to go ahead with the procedure at a later date we can schedule a follow-up, procedure only appointment.

  • Risks are rare but include excessive bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding tissue, reformation or scar tissue that requires another procedure.

  • First appointment

    • Assessment and feeding support only (no procedure): £135

    • Assessment, feeding support & tongue-tie procedure: £250

    The above prices include travel.

    Please note the assessment and feeding support fee will be taken prior to the visit. However, the additional procedure fee of £115 will be payable on the day prior to the procedure.

    Follow-Up

    • Procedure only appointment: £125 (you must have already had an assessment by Danielle which indicated the procedure)

    • Follow-up assessment for re-attachment and feeding support: £90 (If procedure is indicated a further £45 is payable on the day).

  • Tongue-Tie or Anklyoglossia is found in around 3-11% of babies and is where the piece of skin connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth is shorter or tighter than usual.

    There is a difference between a visible frenulum (piece of skin) and a true Tongue-Tie. A frenulum maybe present but the tongue function may not be effected. However, if the tongue is affected it can make the movement of the tongue difficult. Where a tongue has restricted function this can impact infant feeding in numerous ways.

  • Where a tongues movement is restricted it can make it difficult for a baby to breastfeed or bottle-feed. They may:

    • have difficulty attaching (latching) or staying attached to the breast or bottle teat

    • feed for a long time and need to be fed very often

    • dribble a lot during feeds

    • cough, choke or make clicking noises when feeding

    • only take a small amount of milk at each feed

    • lose weight or struggle to put on weight

    If your baby has tongue-tie and you are breastfeeding, you may have sore nipples or painful and swollen breasts.

    It is recommended to see a professional such as Danielle who is both a lactation consultant (IBCLC) and tongue-tie practitioner. This is because there is rarely just a tongue-tie effecting feeding but instead overlapping issues and a full holistic assessment and plan should be implement which will help to optimise the outcome of your feeding journey.

  • Correct assessment, identification and treatment by a trained professional such as Danielle can help to resolve symptoms. Assessment of function as well as appearance is vitally important. Infant feeding support is the first line treatment followed by a frenulotomy.

    A tongue-tie division also called a frenulotomy is a very quick procedure where the practitioner will lift the tongue to expose the tongue-tie and will then divide it with a pair of sterile scissors. It’s natural to be worried about your baby’s reaction to this procedure but is usually similar to having an immunisation and they are quickly soothed by feeding.

    If a frenulotomy is not required Danielle will discuss this with you explaining why and trouble shoot the cause of your issues. From here we will make a full feeding plan alongside you or refer on to another speciality if indicated. You and your childs safety is paramount and this will always be prioritised.

  • We are able to perform a frenulotomy where clinically indicated and consented to children aged 0-6months old.
